Overview
The Department of Otorhinolaryngology is one of the core clinical departments which has been functional since the establishment of Sri Venkateshwaraa Medical College Hospital and Research Centre. The department was started in 2006 and it has come a long way with many achievements to its credit. It has progressed under the auspice, guidance and involvement of our Chairman, Dean, Medical Superintendent, faculty members and students. The department of Otorhinolaryngology is well equipped both in infrastructure and manpower for the comprehensive, compassionate and cost-sensitive management of common and advanced diseases and disorders of Ear, Nose and Throat. At present, the department has five faculty members along with three postgraduate students. Our dedicated professional team is not only committed for treatment but also for disease prevention and health promotion among public by conducting community camps. Our health care process is blended with teaching and research for the betterment of future mankind.
To construct the modern rural & urban India free from the morbidity of infective disease burden in Ear, Nose, Sinus & Throat, rehabilitate the handicap of Congenital & Acquired deafness, prevent and manage Head & Neck malignancies by high-quality health care and effective medical education program.
The consistent ethical service is rendered for all patients. Priority is given in all aspects of health care like prevention, promotion & rehabilitation in addition to effective treatment. We maintain high standards in medical education using latest technologies in teaching-learning activities for both Undergraduate & Postgraduate students. Hands-on clinical & surgical experiences have been provided for postgraduate trainees to create a competence for managing any type of ENT diseases & disorders in the community.

Generic outcome
To produce competent undergraduate medical graduates by imparting knowledge, skills and behavioral attributes related to ENT to serve the community.
Program Specific Outcome
- Understanding of the structural and functional basis, principles of diagnosis and management of common ENT problems in the community by acquisition of undisputed knowledge.
- Ability to elicit a comprehensive history & examination for patients with ENT symptoms for accurate diagnosis & effective management and timely referral.
- Apply the principles of asepsis, sterilization, disinfection, rational use of prophylaxis, therapeutic utilities of antibiotics and universal precautions in surgical practice of Otorhinolaryngology.
- Ability to recognize, resuscitate, stabilize and provide advanced life support to patients following Head & Neck trauma.
- Effectively participate in the National Deafness Control Program.
PG – MS (ENT); Department of Otorhinolaryngology
At the end of postgraduate training, the PG student should be able to:
- Diagnose and appropriately manage common ENT diseases, disorders and conditions in the community.
- Provide appropriate preoperative work-up, post-operative care and follow-up of all ENT surgical patients including emergencies.
- Manage, document and handle effectively all medico-legal ENT cases and refine the learning curve to minimize medical errors.
- Must update knowledge in recent advances and practice newer techniques in the management of the patients in addition to reinforcing the basic medical sciences relevant to Otorhinolaryngology.
- Contribute regularly and actively in all departmental academic activities by presenting Seminar, Case discussion, Journal Club and Topic discussion, temporal bone workshop on weekly basis and maintain logbook.
- Should have basic knowledge of biomedical research methodology & statistics and apply that for dissertation, publications, presentation in conferences.
- The student should learn the basic methodology of teaching-learning activities and develop competence in teaching Undergraduate medical students.
The student should show sensitivity and responsiveness to patients’ culture, age, gender and disabilities while managing patients with importance for ethical principles relating to providing patient care, confidentiality and informed consent.

Facilities
The department is well equipped for patient care and provides out-patient services, elective / emergency surgical procedures and diagnostic services. Outpatient services function six days a week which includes special clinics such as Headache clinic on Tuesdays, Cancer clinic on Wednesdays and Vertigo clinic on Fridays.
Emergency services are promptly and efficiently managed by the ENT team 24*7. Procedures like Diagnostic Nasal Endoscopy (DNE) and Video Laryngoscopic Examination (VLE), Oto-endoscopic examinations/ Examination Under Microscopy (EUM) are done as per scheduled appointment on OPD days and on emergency basis. The audiology section is equipped with INVENTIS VIOLA Audiometer, Impedance Audiometry. Oto-Acoustic Emission (OAE) analysis and Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA) have been made available to facilitate universal screening of newborns.
Our department imparts hands-on training in temporal bone dissection for all Postgraduate students. The state-of-the-art exclusive ENT operation theatre is well equipped with all gadgets including Carl Zeiss Operating Microscope, Karl Storz Sinus Endoscopes, Karl Storz Flexible and Rigid Bronchoscopes, Stryker Micro-debrider, all ENT surgical instruments, etc.
The department has a number of publications in indexed journals to its credit. The department also has many ongoing research works at Undergraduate, Postgraduate and faculty level.
