GENERAL SURGERY
Overview
The dedicated department of General Surgery started in the year 2006 and presently functioning round the clock with eight units, to provide comprehensive surgical care. The surgeons in our department excel in advanced Laparoscopic procedures, major Gastro intestinal surgeries and Endocrine surgeries. We do have a comprehensive screening program for malignancies so that cancers are diagnosed at the earliest possible time and Oncoplastic procedures are done by experienced and super speciality surgeons. We also do diagnostic & therapeutic endoscopies (Upper GI and Colonoscopy). Our department has well experienced faculties for teaching, training and mentoring our undergraduate and postgraduate students. We do all type of general surgeries at affordable cost. We do have tie ups with insurance schemes such as the Tamilnadu Chief Minister’s health insurance scheme, ESI, ECHS, Star Health, etc. for various surgical procedures.

Department of General Surgery is dedicated to provide outstanding clinical care for all people through continuous updation of knowledge, skills, innovation and research, while training the future generation of surgical leaders. We focus on training the residents and postgraduates to excel especially in major Gastro intestinal surgeries, advanced Laparoscopic surgeries and Oncoplastic procedures.

Programme Specific Outcomes
Undergraduate (UG)
Generic Outcome- At the end of Under Graduate Training, the UG students should be able to give First Aid in Emergency Surgical care and have capability to refer the case to relevant specialities.

- Capability to understand the principles and Practical application of sterilization techniques, aseptic measures and Universal precautions.
- Capability to have knowledge about the prophylactic and therapeutic usage of antibiotics in common surgical practice.
- Ability to perform minor Surgical procedures in Primary Health care level.
- Capability of early recognition and immediate resuscitation of critically ill patients.
- Knowledge about common surgical diagnostic procedures in primary health care level.
- Capability to do pre operative counselling and get informed consent about the Surgical Procedures.
Postgraduate- M.S GENERAL SURGERY
At the end, PG Students should be able to- Arrive at clinical diagnosis and order relevant investigations to manage common Surgical problems.
- Identify of Urgent & Emergency cases and manage appropriately in right time.
- Provide pre-operative optimization and post operative care.
- Give counselling to the patient and their relatives about the nature of the disease and possible surgical complications.
- Make the patient to understand the Medico-legal importance of consent before surgery.
- Operate minor cases individually and major cases under supervision.
- Update knowledge about recent advance techniques and surgical managements
- Participate in regular departmental academic activities like Seminars, Case presentations, Journal clubs, etc.
- Conduct Surgical Audit on regular basis and maintain records as per norms.
